Ending the Project

So, we're getting pretty close to the end of our project. To finish, we've decided we're going to make a bunch of cupcakes and hand them out to our neighbors next Saturday probably in the early evening, when it isn't too hot and everyone's back outside.
See you soon!

Day 9

Alien Invasion
Madeline
These were oober easy! All it was was dipping and then putting some stuff on. Since we didn't have chocolate covered sunflower seeds, I used chocolate chips and Linnea used black frosting. Very easy.

Linnea
What Mad said.

Day 8

Petits Fours
Madeline
I loved these before we made them! Very simple and sophisticated. I love them
5 Cupcakes
Linnea
Very easy, simple, and awesome. Enough said.

Day 7

Knitting Needles

Madeline
I REALLY enjoyed these, being an avid knitter myself. I disagree with Linnea when she said that they were slightly difficult, because I found that you just had to get into it, and then it got much easier. VERY AWESOME!!
5 Cupcakes
Linnea
These were definitely not as easy as the book said they were, but they were a whole lot of fun and a bit frustrating. I tell you, there is a LOT of icing on those cupcakes. :)

Day 6

Sunflowers
Madeline
These were very whimsical and fun. The directions are a bit confusing when it comes to mixing the yellow and orange frosting, but they still looked wonderful!
4.5 Cupcakes
Linnea
Well....not the best. I mean, the concept of making sunflowers is REALLY COOL, but ours were nowhere near as good as the ones in the book. But hey, I guess that's normal, considering they're professionals. They do have Oreos, which makes them even better than other cupcakes.

Day 5

Pup Cakes
Madeline
Since we did not have those wafers, I tried using multiple Oreo cookies and "gluing" them together with frosting.... That didn't exactly work...... The marshmallow I used was to hold the snout up, because otherwise it would've fallen. We also did not have brown food coloring, so my frosting that was supposed to be golden-brown, ended up looking up, well, like poop. :( My bad(ish) review is only because mine did not turn out so great. I'm sure that if I had done what Nea had done it would've been fine. Good luck if you try!
2.5 Cupcakes
Linnea
These puppies were ADORABLE!! I thought I was going to ruin my dalmatian cupcake, but it turned out pretty good. We've definitely gotten better at cupcaking! :)

3.25 Cupcakes!

Note: On the days June 8th and 10th, we took days off from cupcaking, because our schedules did not allow it on those days. Please check the calendar below for more updates.

Day 4

Pandamonium
Madeline
These are so cute!! Instead of a chocolate covered sunflower seed, we made the noses be M&MS, so they would be more chocolately. The pictures in the book look amazing, so it was pretty much impossible for it to be perfect, but they are still adorable! I would DEFINITELY make these again.
4.5 Cupcakes
Linnea
I can't believe just how adorable these pandas are. I messed up on my mouth, but my panda (the one on the left) still looks cute and cudly, like a teddy bear. I agree with Mad, these are definitely hit.
5 Cupcakes
4.75 Cupcakes!

Banana Split
Madeline
Meh. I wouldn't make it again.
1 Cupcake
Linnea
I really thought these were kinda cool, but, since we couldn't/didn't get all the elements (ex. the cherries, banana), it wasn't as awesomely awesome as it could be.

2 Cupcakes!

Day 3

All Cracked Up

Madeline
These were just as easy as the fries. I have one warning, though. DO NOT use a drop of red food coloring!!!!!! When I did that, it was too orangey, and I used about a thousand more drops of yellow food coloring, and it got too thin. Easy, but BEWARE! :)
4 cupcakes
Linnea
If you like lemon curd (like Madeline and I) then this is the cupcake for you! The yolk is all lemon curd dyed to look a bit more yolky, squeezed onto the frosted mini cupcake. These are one of my favorites yet, pretty much because of the lemon curd involved. All hail lemon curd!!!

Day 2

March of the Penguins
Madeline
By George, I think we've got it! Dipping was MUCH easier today!! We're still not perfect, but they didn't look like their skin had been ripped off. This was very sweet, because over half of the cupcake is frosting covered donut. Since they were too sweet for us to eat ourselves, we let Linnea's little brother Alex try one. He really liked it, so we have to be on to something! :)
2 Cupcakes
Linnea
These penguins were so CUTE!!! We had only one problem, and that was with the doughnut body not behaving. Even within a day, I think we improved in our cupcaking skills.

Side of Fries

Madeline
Easiest cupcake ever!!!!! Pound cake is yummy. :)
1.5 Cupcakes
Linnea
I tell you, the authors were right when they said that the fries were easy! The hardest part was toasting the pound cake that were going to be our fries, and that was a breeze. It's so cool what you can create with junk food and candy :P

Day 1

This is one day late because we had some technical difficulties yesterday.

Bagels and Lox
Madeline
Since I have absolutely NO idea what Lox is, I really have nothing to compare this cupcake to.  If you like sugar, this should be perfect for you. We could't find mini donuts, so we used rather small regular ones. It was huge(!!!), but very easy to make. Just thinking about where to take a bite is daunting in itself. Delicious, but I wouldn't make it again.
2 Cupcakes
Linnea
Honestly, considering this was my very first time doing anything to a cupcake aside from eating it, I think it went well. It was a bit easier than the rubber ducks, but it had TONS of sugar. So, if you like sweet things-I mean, like, REALLY sweet things, this is for you. All of this extra candy makes it look AWESOME, but it makes  a certain person's teeth want to fall out.

Rubber Ducks
Madeline
These were very fun to make!!! These were much more difficult than the Bagels and Lox cupcakes, and the most difficult part was the dipping. They make it look very easy and professional in the books, but it was hard! These were very yummy, and very challenging!
3.5 Cupcakes
Linnea
This was my pick, and I think I should have picked it once we had really made sure that we might have some skills in cupcaking. I agree with Madeline. The part with the dipping of the cupcakes into the the frosting was EXTREMELY difficult, but, aside from that, it wasn't too bad. In fact, it was a lot of fun!

Some Specifics

We have created a calendar of when we are going to be making these delectable cupcakes! We will start out with two a day and wind down with just one a day. This calendar is subject to change, but we will let you know if it does. So, here's how this is going to work. We will each decorate two cupcakes and then each write our own column reviewing the cupcakes. At the end of our review, we will give the cupcake a rating on a scale of 1-5 cupcakes (instead of stars). At the very bottom, we will make an average rating, using the same scale. Here's to cupcaking!

Coming Soon!

Hi. We're Madeline and Linnea. Hopefully if you're reading this you have seen or at least heard of Julie and Julia. We are doing our own spin on that by making all of the cupcakes in the books Hello, Cupcake! and What's New, Cupcake? Since we are minors and both have camps to go to, we only have about 27 days to make these cupcakes, so we will be making a good few a day. Now that you know who we are, please sit back and wait for the launch of our project, on June 4. If you would like to contact us at anytime you can email us at cupcakesistas@gmail.com. See you then! ;)
